Community Connection

Time to get back in gear

By Staff | Aug 18, 2021

August is wrapping up and it’s time to get back in gear.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners started meeting again as has the Civic Association, which started meeting again on Aug. 10.

We are already hard at work to help select an Air Conditioner give away recipient, schools are back in session and we have been working with the schools to pick a teacher to receive a monetary award.

Last month I mentioned the Adopt a Teacher program we wanted to start. The Fund Raiser was a success, so we will make those awards.

The program is intended to bridge the gap between our community and the schools. We focused on new teachers within North Fort Myers who needed help to stock their classrooms with supplies. Shockingly, 96% of teachers purchase school supplies so their students don’t go without with most spending $745 a year on supplies.

We wanted to help our teachers as much as we could and donate as much as possible to all eight North Fort Myers Schools.

Last month I also mentioned the North Fort Myers Civic Association Care Bears Program and, on June 30 we presented North Fort Myers Fire Rescue with 60 bears.

First responders, whether they’re law enforcement, firefighters or emergency medical technicians, are trained to handle unbearable situations involving young victims or witnesses. The North Fort Myers Fire Department now has one more way to help soothe children at the scenes of crimes or accidents. The North Fort Myers Civic Association delivered a second batch of stuffed care bears to our local first responders.

Our “care bears” are given to provide love, friendship, and to help cheer up children in their time of need.

These “Trauma Care Bears” are given in hopes of softening the impact and changing their focus to a comforting object during a difficult situation.

We would like the community’s involvement to continue raising funds and provide our first responders with Care Bears.

If you would like to participate in donating a Care Bear, visit the store on our website, https://nfmcivic.com. The direct link is https://nfmcivic.com/store/Care-Bear-Program-p371002949 .

As we look at the rest of the year, we will be putting together the Fall Festival, the Angel Tree, North Fort Myers Santa Run, Holiday Giveaways, and possible monthly events.

Continue to follow us online NFMCivic.com, Facebook, and through the North Fort Myers Neighbor Living.

Remember we meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm till 8:30 p.m. at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center at 2000 North Recreation Park Way.
