Tell your Hurricane Ian story

Alliance for the Arts partners with Gulf Coast Writers Association on Storm Stories project

By Staff | Jan 31, 2023

Where were you? How did you fare? What have you learned? Who became your hero?

In partnership with The Alliance for the Arts, Gulf Coast Writers Association invites stories written by those who survived Hurricane Ian, those who volunteered in its aftermath, and those who witnessed heroic deeds.

All who experienced the storm are encouraged to submit their stories. There is no fee to enter. The Alliance for the Arts and Gulf Coast Writers Association will “harvest” the stories of this unprecedented disaster, and Gulf Coast Writers will compile these stories in an anthology to be made available to the public in September 2023.

Storm stories may be submitted to gulfwriters.org or artinlee.org. Gulf Coast Writers may edit Storm Stories for the printed book. To be included in the book, stories must be submitted to gulfcoastwriters.org by April 1. The Alliance for the Arts will continue harvesting stories beyond the print deadline.

Submissions to The Alliance of the Arts website may be oral or written. For oral submission, participants can call 239-744-3047 and leave their story anonymously. Callers have three minutes to tell their account. If more time is needed, story tellers can call back and continue.

Submission is open to all ages. There is no cost to enter and no word limit, although Gulf Coast Writers may edit stories for publication.

In addition to collecting Storm Stories, The Alliance for the Arts will host a month-long exhibition in September to commemorate the anniversary of Hurricane Ian. The exhibit will feature artworks inspired by Hurricane Ian by Florida artists and documentary-style photography by Kinfay Moroti. The book of Storm Stories will also premiere during the exhibition.

The mission of Gulf Coast Writers Association is to foster the love of words among writers and would-be writers. The Alliance for the Arts is a vibrant nonprofit visual and performing arts center in Fort Myers. This partnership of Storm Stories is the first collaboration between the two organizations.
