Island business owner forms Kite Club

Dave Axler, owner of Pine Island Cycles, has announced the creation of the Pine Island Kite Club.
“It’s a funny story about how I got into this,” Axler said. “I had a friend that mentioned he had never flown a kite, so I went out and bought a $10 kite that he could fly. From there the idea of forming a club came to mind.”
It’s believed that kites originated in China about 2,000 years ago. Kites have come a long way since that time. Kites have played an important role in history. They have been used in religious ceremonies, warfare, scientific developments, fishing, and relaxation.
“It’s a great way to relax,” Axler said. “Almost all kites fall into two categories, single line kites and multi-line kites. This refers to the number of lines that a flier controls his kite with.
Multi-line kites are usually sport kites. Some are flat while others are bowed and kites can be purchased for as little as $10 and Pine Island Cycles has a full line of kites.
“I think it’s important for people to find something relaxing and I find it exciting and relaxing all at the same time,” Axler said. “The club gets together once or twice a week and flies kites in the open area at Cap’n Cons.”
