Horsin’ Around Deli takes customers seriously
When the Horsin’ Around Deli at 10440 Bayshore Road went up for sale, Tiffany Ogden wasn’t about to let anyone from outside the company buy it and turn it into something else.
Ogden was a caterer who had been making desserts for the deli for 10 years and didn’t want to see it change. So she quietly bought the place in July, allowing it to keep its small town charm.
Ogden said it was the best move she’s ever made.
“I’m very blessed to be able to own the place. It’s not something the old owners wanted to do, but it was time. Running a deli is hard work,” Ogden said. “It’s one of a kind, and I didn’t want anyone to change it.”
Being a small deli in a small shopping center where Hogbody’s is, reputation is everything. Offering first-class service for 22 years is a good way to stay in business, as word gets out in the community.
“It’s word-of-mouth and we have a great local base and between the staff and customers, that’s what makes it here. It’s a great place to come. We’re like a little country hangout, but the customers are awesome and so is the staff,” Ogden said.
Horsin’ Around does pretty much what a deli usually does, make great sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, as well as soups, salads, burgers and desserts.
Many of their items are in the $5 to $7 range, with all wraps and burgers $8 and featured subs $9 for a whole one.
“We’re known for our world-famous Cuban, we have a healthy section of the menu and homemade desserts made in house,” Ogden said. “Even for breakfast they have our desserts.”
Ogden said when she bought Horsin’ Around, she wanted to keep things as an experience, as people are going to places as much for the positive experience as for the food.
“We knew their name and we usually know what they want to drink. I think that’s what brings people back beside the food,” Ogden said. “They know we care and get good quality time.”
What started as an ice cream shop has evolved and will continue to do so. Ogden, a baker by trade, said she wants to put her own stamp on the place by putting in a full bakery in the future.
Horsin’ Around Deli is currently open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with plans to expand the hours to 6 p.m. during the week (as it had been) as season gets into full swing.
