Victory Lane to host charity rib rodeo

2 min read

Some of the best barbecuers in the area will converge on Victory Lane Cafe at 4128 Hancock Bridge Parkway in North Fort Myers on Saturday to see who really is the king of the slab and to raise money to help the poorest of the poor in the area.

Jim’s Friends Helping Friends of North Fort Myers will present a Rib Rodeo, where judges and customers can come to lasso some of the best ribs you’ve ever tasted.

Jim’s Friends, run by James Roberts, has come to the rescue for many North Fort Myers residents who need a financial lift. Some have suffered cancer or other ailments they cannot pay for, while others may not have the money to buy their children Christmas presents.

“We wanted to get people together because it’s been a long time since we’ve done a beef cook-off and we wanted to raise money for my dad’s organization,” said J.D. Roberts, James’ son, who said he got the idea for the event from all the cookouts he had and his friends and he would compete to see who had the best ribs.

Between 16 and 20 cooks are expected to pay the $50 entry fee, and judges will be on hand to select the top three. There also will be a People’s Choice Award given to the team the non-experts deems to be the best.

The public can buy a $12 ticket and get the chance to taste of everyone’s ribs and cast their vote.

The event starts at noon and is expected to end at 6 p.m. Not only will there be great food, but also a kids play area with bounce houses, a 50/50 raffle and raffles for other prizes from Lowe’s and Home Depot, vendor booths, a live DJ and much more.

And it’s going for a great cause, to help those in need in the community.

“If someone is in dire need, if they don’t have health insurance, we help. Cancer is one of the things my dad always helps out for people. We also help families who otherwise won’t have a Christmas,” Roberts said. “He picks out 10 families with help from his friends in the community. It’s usually single parents and we help the kids.”
