Weiss joins Busey Bank as Regional President in Florida

With an established and growing commitment to providing financial solutions to its customers, Busey Bank recently named James R. Weiss as Executive Vice President – Regional President of Florida. He will lead a Busey team dedicated to the financial needs of Florida’s communities.
“As we continue to enhance our organizational structure and business model, we believe Jim’s leadership, vast experience across business segments and extensive knowledge of the Florida market are a perfect fit for Busey’s client-focused culture,” said Willie Mayberry, President of Regional Banking at Busey Bank. “He’s a hands-on leader with the skill-set, motivation and personality to help Busey continue to build upon its significant success in the region.”
Weiss will take the reins from Charles Idelson, who served as Busey’s regional president in Florida since 2019, when the company he founded, Investors’ Security Trust, merged with the bank. Idelson will remain with Busey and serve as market chairman of its Florida Region, working closely with market leadership to identify and engage new business opportunities.
For Weiss, Busey’s strengths and resiliency through all economic conditions made it an attractive destination for the next phase of his career.
“I’m extremely excited to join Busey Bank and lead the team in its Florida Region,” he said. “Busey is well known for its outstanding service, strong leadership and culture and dedication to the communities it serves, and financially for its high-quality, resilient loan portfolio and robust capital position driven by strong core deposits. These strengths-and its proven resiliency-add up to a bank that can deliver broad, tailored solutions to existing and new customers no matter the economic cycle.”
Weiss began his formal banking career in 1994 at Commerce Bank in Clayton, MO, as a Commercial Credit Training Program/Underwriter. He worked his way to First Vice President-Business Banking Team Lead at Commerce before joining Fifth Third Bank as Vice President-Commercial Sales Manager in St. Louis in 2007. He transitioned to the Florida region in 2012 as Senior Vice President-Business Banking Executive with Fifth Third in Tampa Bay, and would serve as Senior Commercial Banking Executive, Credit Risk Executive and Regional President of South Florida before joining Busey.
“I look forward to leveraging my connections and experience across the state of Florida to accelerate the growth of the Busey franchise,” Weiss said. “I believe we’re uniquely positioned to leverage our strong financial condition to continue to expand and gain market share in the region.”
Weiss holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Finance from Saint Louis University. He currently serves on the boards of directors for the Florida Chamber Foundation Community Development Partnership Council, the Florida Bankers Association and The Naples Zoo. He is also a past member of several organization’s boards including the Tampa Hillsborough County Economic Development Corporation; The Florida Aquarium; the Tampa Bay Partnership – Transportation Committee; the Tampa Chamber of Commerce; the City of Tampa Affordable Housing Mayor’s Task Force; and the Downtown Tampa Partnership.
