Empowering the Haitian community through volunteerism: United Way VITA program
United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades is gearing up for the 2024 tax season and calling on volunteers to join its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This year, the program takes on added significance as it forges a meaningful partnership with the United Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of SWFL.
“Our collaboration with United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades offers visibility and access to a service for a population that may often be taking advantage of, for lack of awareness,” said Rosmy Louis, founder of the UHACC.
Through the shared values of the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce and United Way, this endeavor seeks to empower the community with financial knowledge and resources, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for all.
United Way is seeking volunteer tax preparers and Bilingual-Haitian Creole speaking interpreters to provide essential no-cost tax preparation services at over 20 locations across Southwest Florida, including the United Haitian American Chamber of Commerce in Fort Myers.
Volunteer tax preparers will receive comprehensive IRS certified training, equipping them with the skills to navigate basic tax returns, use online tax preparation software, and understand tax credits and deductions that benefit eligible taxpayers. Individuals of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to volunteer. Moreover, experienced professionals such as agents, certified financial planners, attorneys, and non-credentialed tax return preparers can earn continuing education credits while giving back through the VITA program.
Last season, United Way’s VITA program generated federal refunds exceeding $7.9 million across Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Charlotte counties. The dedication of 177 certified volunteers enabled over 7,100 VITA clients to access vital tax assistance, saving them over $2.2 million in tax preparation fees that could then be allocated for essential needs such as food, medical care, housing, and more.
The VITA program thrives on the commitment of volunteers who value community impact. This is an opportunity to contribute to a cause that directly improves lives, especially among those who lack the means to engage commercial tax services. Whether you are experienced or new to tax preparation, your willingness to help makes a significant difference.
