Donna Capuano, a North Fort Myers resident for the last 20 years, has recently entered into a new business ventures. She sells chocolates which she bills as “healthy” – a product that comes from an ancient culture, she said.

“They are the Xocai line of treats,” she said of the line pronounced so-shy. “It’s from an Aztec Mayan word. The name came about from a royal chocolate drink called xocolatl. That is what the ancient Aztecs and Mayans used to drink.”

She said the concept of the ingredients was a huge part of their culture.

“It eventually evolved into money, and was used for ceremonies and celebrations as well as health benefits,” she said.

Capuano went into this business venture in March, and the chocolates/chocolate products are not available in retail stores.

“We have home parties, office parties, go to meetings and give chocolate tasting parties,” she said. “We also talk to doctors about it.”

When asked why she talks to doctors, Capuano said she personally believes the product has health benefits.

“It has the number one and number two antioxidant foods in the entire world in it – unprocessed cocoa powder is number one and acai berry is number two,” she said.

She describes the chocolates and other spin-off products as rich dark Belgian chocolate with benefits. It can come in small chocolate squares, a powdered form to make a drink or cookies with chocolate chips and fiber.

“Those squares also have Omega 3 in them,” she said.

How did she get into the healthy chocolate business?

“My daughter-in-law’s family are all in the business,” she said. “They highly recommended the product. I was a little skeptical at first because I do have to watch my caffeine, but when I found out there’s no caffeine in our chocolate, I said I love chocolate – who doesn’t – so I tried it. I found a lot of benefits in it.

“I started eating three squares a day like it was recommended, and I did want to lose weight, and then it just happened.”

She said several celebrities are behind her product.

“Marie Osmond endorses our product. We also have several athletes that do as well,” she said.

Concerning health benefits, she noted several factors that attracted her to the product.

“It’s more nutritious because it’s cold pressed, which is unprocessed. We don’t add milk or white sugar or preservatives,” she said. “It contains fiber, helps to balance your cholesterol. I’ve lost 16 pounds on it, it helps weight loss. It also scavenges free radicals. Free radicals help your body get diseases.”

She said she believes the product also improves insulin levels, supports the vascular system, lowers bad cholesterol and may reduce blood pressure.

“It also cleanses and detoxifies,” she said.

Her line will include squares, nuggets and powerhouse cookies.

Capuano and her husband are both originally from the Pittsburgh area.

“My husband had friends here who kept sending us the paper with places to rent, and friends said it was so beautiful here, you just have to move here,” she said. “Both of my boys were born in Florida, but their favorite place to go is Pittsburgh’s Kennywood amusement park. Anyone from there knows it.”

In her spare time, she said, she likes to keep healthy.

“I like to swim and go white-water rafting, and I like to go to Europe,” she said. “My husband has family in Italy.”

One of her goals is to take an African safari one day.
