Golf tournament to benefit North Fort Myers Red Knights

A golf tournament to benefit the North Fort Myers High School Red Knights will be held Saturday, Aug 29. The event will be held at the course at Magnolia Landing Golf and County Club.
“This is for the total athletic program, which includes all the boys and girls sports,” said Coach Al Coffin. “That’s everything from football to swimming, track and more.
“The financial situation is, in the schools, the athletics departments are not getting the financial backing we had,” he continued. “We’re going to pick up our own funding.”
He said “golf parents” are stepping up, but more community members are needed for the fund raiser and sponsorships.
Organizers have a premiere site. The 18-hole Magnolia Landing course at the Golf Club At Magnolia Landing facility in North Fort Myers features 7,265 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.
“Magnolia Landing is a championship golf course designed by Gordon Lewis, who has designed many, many courses and is known as a premiere architect in Southwest Florida and this is one of his best,” said Magnolia head golf professional and membership director Brian Wasser.
“It’s an 8:30 shotgun start, four-person teams,” he continued. “We’ll have close to the pins on all par threes and it should be a lot of fun. We’re looking to raise money and are actually hosting North Fort Myers High School as their home golf course.
“We’ve allowed the kids to use the practice facility and more.”
The tournament is open to the public.
The cost is $75 per golfer, with different sponsorships available.
There will also be a raffle.
“We’re trying to get people to donate items, anything from restaurant gift cards or store gift cards,” said Coffin.
“As bad as the economy is, we’re up 50 percent in membership,” noted
Wasser of the Magnolia club. “Rounds and revenues are he same. We are under new management, which took place Dec. 12, with Windham Development and Cal Morrison is the only builder in here. There are 30 homes under construction here and they are all sold.”
Wasser said he is also excited to see local Michelle Chin in the Women’s Junior Amateur Golf Tournament as she played at Magnolia Landing and played for the American Junior Golf Association tournament at Magnolia two years ago.
