Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is sponsoring a back-to-school “Fun Day” for local children Aug. 22 – the Saturday before school starts. The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in and around the church grounds, with lots of free fun and food for local kids.

“It’s going to be free fun, where you can get the kids out. With the current financial distress, we’ve discovered families need free family wholesome fun,” said church Pastor Tom Willetts. “Everyone is welcome.”

Judy Stephenson is secretary of the staff parish relations committee.

“Outside activities will include food (hot dogs, lemonade and cookies) as well as a bounce house and a Slip ‘N Slide game, face painting, magic tricks and a bean-bag toss.

“A putting surface will allow children to enjoy trying to emulate Tiger Woods with the help of my husband, Jim Stephenson, a former PGA golf pro who attends Good Shepherd church,” Stephenson said.

She said there will also be a special photo opportunities a real LeMans Porche race car brought by Stephen Zoeller.

Zoeller is involved with a group called “Racecars Ministries.”

“He is a chaplain and actually goes to races and ministers to crews and drivers, as they travel all over the country,” said Willetts.

“He’s based out of Sebring and was just in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and will be be going to California soon.”

Inside activities will feature music, and Bible stories told by a “biblical character” in costume. More activities may be planned as the day draws nearer including possible clowns.

“This is a follow-up to our very successful ‘Celebrate Jesus’ event held at the Shell Factory in June,” said Willetts. “With the help of North United Methodist Church and Suncoast Ministries, we were able to reach several hundred people in our community with food, games and music as well as prayer requests – and we want to keep that momentum going.”

“‘The Back-to-School Fun Day’ will be smaller in scale, but dedicated to the children so they can enjoy a final day before school starts on Monday, Aug. 24.”

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is located at 2951 Trail Dairy Circle in North Fort Myers, just two stoplights north of the Shell Factory on U.S. 41 then a block east on Trail Dairy Circle.
