Relay organizers now looking for NFM teams
A party to launch North Fort Myers presence in the upcoming Relay For Life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Victory Lane Cafe in North Fort Myers.
The Cafe had a team last year, and will participate again this year. Cafe owner Billie Jo Daggett is a major supporter of the vent.
“We are encouraging the community as a whole to come out and fight this battle,” said Nickole Henrda, community representative for the American Cancer Society of Lee County. “We also need cancer survivors and care givers to turn out for this event. The theme this year is ‘Celebrate More Birthdays’ by local businesses, family teams, care givers and survivors participating in the event.”
The Victory Lane gathering is way to learn about the event. “This will be an informal program that will be presented to educate and inform interested parties in the event.”
This is the third year for a North Fort Myers event.
Teams can consist of 10 to 15 people and can be made up of family and friends, clubs, schools, businesses and churches. All they need to do is to commit to having someone from their team be on the walking track at all times during the event.
They can also do on-site fund raising through different activities such as games, bake sales or other activities that can raise money.
The Relay For Life North Fort Myers event will be held Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, at J. Colin English Elementary. The 18-hour event begins at 6 p.m. on the 14th ends at noon on the 15th. J. Colin English Elementary School is located at 120 Pine Island Rd.
The school is a force behind the effort.
“We’re really looking forward to hosting that event for the North Fort Myers Community,” said J. Colin English Principal Joe Williams, III. “There’s been a big push amongst our staff to get involved.”
Assistant Principal Toni Walker is working with two teams.
“So far we have a school team and a church team.”
The church team is from the Living Waters Family Worship Center in Cape Coral/North Fort Myers.
“It’s extremely important first of all; we always want to be of assistance to the community,” Walker said. “It’s an amazing organization, they reach out to so many people and we’re honored to be part of it.”
