Local business leaders talked about how they use Social Media to promote their businesses at the recent North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Business Leaders Luncheon.

Kandace Salter of Ez To Use Blue Book was the guest speaker. She talked about her own business success using the alternative advertising media.

“With any media, you want a consistent, on-going message,” she said.

Social media like Facebook, Twitter and more are now tools you can use to add to your media arsenal.

“Facebook began as a college thing but now is so much more. It’s especially expanding here in Southwest Florida.”

She said she has had 902 people on her friends list in only the last two months. These are friends and business acquaintances, she said. “It’s an on-going marketing thing for me to keep in contact with my clients. You can develop a deeper connection with them and ideally we can do business in the future.”

She gave tips on juggling the social and business aspects. “I’ve been able to blend the two.”

In other Chamber news, Executive Director Kim Constantine invited the community to attend a dinner on Friday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m., as part of the Nite Golf Event. “We have most of our golfers – the dinner is $15 and we have wonderful auction events.”

She also said to mark your calendar for Friday, March 26. That’s the date of the Honorary Mayor event. “Nothing compares to this event, it’s something not to be missed.”

The Honorary Mayor event will be held at Marantha Gardens, and it will have a barbecue theme. “It’s a ho-down you won’t forget and an event to feel the spirit of what North Fort Myers is all about.”

“Candidates” will be announced next week, then people get to “vote” at $1 each vote for their future honorary Mayor hopeful.

Deputy of the Month

Chamber President and Lee County Sheriff’s office Deputy Jarrod Cantrell presented an award to Deputy Aimee Barlow, who was named Deputy of the Month for February, 2010.

Lt. Steve Edlin nominated Barlow, and Cantrell noted the case and her performance that got her the honor.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint via 911 in regard to a burglary alarm at the closed business of Radio Shack located at 13060 North Cleveland Ave. one evening, Edlin said in his nomination.

Deputy Aimee Barlow was working the evening shift and responded to the alarm.

Upon arriving at the location she observed a white male lurking in front of the business.

“Deputy Barlow took a tactical approach to confront the suspect who upon seeing the officer entered his vehicle and took flight.”

She then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Deputy Barlow, through her investigative skills, determinedthe suspect was attempting to burglarize the business to steal merchandise intending to sell to buy cocaine.

The man was charged with burglary, criminal mischief and operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

“Deputy Barlow is to be commended for her quick response and her keen observation and investigative skills. This is just one example of this officer’s performance. Do to her dedication and professionalism Deputy Barlow was able to foil a burglary in progress making Lee County a safer place to live,” Edlin said.
