North Fort Myers Man Arrested For Child Neglect

2 min read

A North Fort Myers man is under arrest for leaving his two young daughters at home alone while he searched for his girlfriend at an adult night club.

On March 9, 2010, Walter Jamel Johnson was stopped by a Fort Myers police officer for trying to break into a vehicle at Babe’s, located at 3654 Cleveland Avenue, Fort Myers. The police officer asked the Lee County sheriff’s office to dispatch a deputy to 1064 North Tamiami Trail, Lot #6, North Fort Myers.

Upon arrival, the deputy observed two young girls, ages six and four, home alone in the residence. The residence was in disarray and the oven had been left on to provide heat for the children. The deputy secured the residence and stayed with the children.

Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Child Abuse Investigative Unit quickly responded to Babe’s to assume their part of the investigation. Johnson told the detectives he was looking for his girlfriend, who worked at Babe’s but had not returned home after her shift. Johnson admitted to detectives that he had walked to Babe’s from his North Fort Myers residence and had left his young daughters at home alone.

At this time, the detectives responded to Johnson’s residence, with Johnson voluntarily accompanying them. A further visual assessment of the residence revealed several environmental hazards, most notably a curling iron left plugged in and lying in the sink and other electrical cords hanging within children’s reach.

Detectives also took a sworn statement from a relative of the young girls who stated that Johnson has on numerous occasions left the children home unattended for long periods of time.

Arrested: Walter Jamel Johnson, DOB 10-11-81, of 1604 North Tamiami Trail, Lot #6, North Fort Myers, charged with Child Neglect without harm.
