Sheriff’s Youth Team To Compete At World O.M.
The Sheriff’s Youth Activities League (S.Y.A.L.) Odyssey of the Mind Team (O.M.) earned a 3rd place finish at the state championships in Orlando over the weekend of April 10, 2010. The six Lee County middle school students who comprise the team are now qualified to compete at the world level on May 26th at Michigan State University. Teams from twenty six countries are expected to attend. Team coach Arlene Kalstrom and husband, Sheriff’s Lieutenant William Kalstrom, are now focused on fund raising efforts to pay for travel expenses. Those efforts will be announced soon.
“Odyssey of the Mind” is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
