Skeletal remains found in Fort Myers home

2 min read

Deputies conducting a well-being check on a woman in Fort Myers Friday discovered the skeletal remains of what are believed to be the woman’s elderly mother.

The remains were not immediately found at the 6242 St. Andrews Circle North home as the residence was described to be in “deplorable condition.”

A death investigation is under way but investigators do not currently believe foul play was involved, according to a prepared statement issued by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning.

A deputy responding to the well-being call, found the resident, Gail Andrews, 61, living in conditions that warranted a call to the Florida Department of Children and Families, officials said, adding an investigator from that agency responded to begin an investigation.

Meanwhile, detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit initiated follow up on information regarding the whereabouts of Andrew’s mother. A search warrant was granted and investigators executing the warrant discovered the remains in the home. The remains were not in plain view due to the condition of the residence, officials said.

The deceased has been released to the District 21 Medical Examiner. It will be several weeks before cause of death can be determined. Positive identification also will be sought during the time period, officials said.

In addition to DCF, Lee County officials with Code Enforcement, Health Department and Animal Services have been contacted to provide assistance and assessment at the home. Gail Andrews has been put in touch with social service organizations.

The Sheriff’s Office investigation continues.
