LCEC offers tips for remaining safe around utility lines
LCEC urges customers to stay safe around power lines. Across the nation, accidents involving people coming in contact with power lines continue to occur. This year alone, several have been reported within Southwest Florida and they usually result in very serious injury or fatality.
Karen Ryan, LCEC spokesperson said, “Our focus is always on the safety of customers and employees. Simple precautions can help avoid a potential tragedy.”
LCEC provides the following advice:
If you live in an area that has underground power lines, be sure to call Sunshine State One Call, 1-800-432-4770 before digging. The free service will result in underground lines being clearly marked by professionals. Digging without calling could harm you and those around you or disrupt service to your entire neighborhood.
Children, trees and power lines don’t mix. Never climb or allow children to climb trees in or around power lines. If you become aware of a dangerous situation where a tree is in the power line call a licensed tree-trimmer to clear the hazard.
Always look up when working outdoors. Pay close attention to the location of overhead power lines. When making roof repairs, cleaning gutters or simply moving a ladder or other long object be wary of lines within reach and stay clear of them. Assess the possible hazards before you start the job.
It’s storm season, so if you see a downed power line, stay away and keep others away until LCEC or FPL crews arrive on the scene. Do not attempt to move a downed power line with any object.
