Talk to any child who has seen him, and they will tell you Coastie is the best.

Coastie the Safety Boat was featured in a North Fort Myers Library program on Wednesday, July 28, to a packed crowd of delighted children. Escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Coastie is an interactive miniature boat that teaches water and boating safety.

One participant was two-year-old Mallory Wells of Cape Coral, who hugged and even kissed Coastie. “We really enjoyed the program,” said mom Dena Wells. “The Auxiliary did a great job.”

“We are impressing safe boating for everyone,” said the Auxiliary’s Armando Ingratta.

“Coastie listens to the children and is interactive,” said the Auxiliary’s Ray Knoll. “He has lights and sirens, which keep the kids’ attention. We’ve been doing these programs at schools, libraries and parks. We’ve done it for up to 500 at a school. We enjoy it.”

“One of the main reasons we do this program is the educational aspect and prevention. We train these children today in safety and we may not have to save them tomorrow.”

Terry Sweeney of the Auxiliary helped with Coastie and the children, and helped dispense safety information.

It was a highly successful program, part of a equally successful summertime reading program at the library, said Children’s and Teen Librarian Denise Hancock. “We have another great upcoming programs called “Hydro Bracelets for Teens” to be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12. They are easy to make, and a new trend.”

Teenagers can make water-filled bracelet with beads, glitter and “plenty of pizzazz.” All materials will be supplied. The program is for middle and high school students only, and registration is requested.

“Parents are grateful for high quality free programs and activities for their children,” she said.
