Highway Interdiction Unit Seizes 29 Counterfeit Credit Cards During Traffic Stop

On Wednesday, November 30, 2010, at approximately 9:08 p.m., a detective assigned to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Highway Interdiction Unit was patrolling I-75 in North Fort Myers. The detective conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Cavalier for traveling too closely in the southbound lanes. The vehicle had two occupants. A Florida State Trooper from the Contraband Interdiction Unit responded to the stop to assist. Upon making contact with the driver the detective noticed that both occupants were extremely nervous and remained so throughout the stop. Other indicators of criminal activity were observed by the detective during the traffic stop including inconsistent travel plans and prior criminal history of the driver. The driver gave the detective consent to search the vehicle after being given a written warning.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 29 cloned credit cards and 59 cartons of Marlboro cigarettes suspected to be purchased with the fraudulent credit cards. The Florida State Trooper assisted in the investigation and was able to confirm that each of the 29 credit cards was in fact cloned. Due to the nature of the incident the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes unit will assume the investigation.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Rudenz Vidal De La Campa (DOB 09/25/66) and Alcides Urbay (DOB 07/11/64) were arrested and charged as follows:

1 Count of trafficking (10 or more) in counterfeit credit cards

Urbay was also charged with:

1 Count of possession of ID without consent of another
