By popular demand, free shuffleboard lessons will continue the next three Saturdays at North Community Park’s shuffleboard courts.

The courts are home to the Lee County Shuffleboard Club. John Speer is a past president and avid player there, and said the response to their first offerings of free lessons has been exceptional.

“The lessons are taught by Ivan “Lucky” Lam and Betty Bodkin of the club,” Speer said. “The classes are free from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays through Feb. 5.”

No registration is needed, you just show up, he added.

Whys are lessons important for players? Speer has called shuffleboard “chess with a stick.” Beginning players are welcome, along with more advanced players.

New members are also welcome. “We have over 290 members now, and many upcoming tournaments,” he said.

For safety, officials noted, there are no flip flops or open-toed shoes allowed on the courts during lessons, practice or play.

The courts are located in North Park, behind the North Fort Myers Library.

The club itself plays there every day except Sunday, starting at 12:30 p.m.
