North Fort Myers Community Plan Meeting March 1
Driving across the Caloosahatchee Bridge going north, you don’t expect to see anything like a “Town Center.” But you may – someday – if local efforts to improve North Fort Myers advance as planned.
The North Fort Myers Design Review/Planning Panel, Lee County staff, LaRue Planning & Management Services, and citizens in North Fort Myers are working together as part of a long-term effort to improve the look and feel of North Fort Myers.
They would like the public’s help at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 1 at the Community of Christ Church at 368 Heron Road in North Fort Myers, off Cleveland Avenue and Pineapple Lane. Those attending will be asked to comment on new codes that will take the North Fort Myers community plan from idea to reality.
New regulations for North Fort Myers, its neighborhood centers and commercial corridors are under development now. The proposed Town Center is next.
The Town Center located north of the river, east of US 41, and south of Pondella Road extends all the way to Old 41. Right now you’ll see a variety of commercial businesses, some of them closed, large parking lots, all developed with traditional zoning not exactly pedestrian friendly or brimming with life and vitality.
The Lee Plan – our county’s guide to growth – envisions the Town Center area as a “destination for living, shopping, working and socializing.” A better mix of uses, more density, attractive architecture, better landscaping, and public spaces are some of many ideas proposed. Getting the public’s say is essential at this point. This is the time when the specifics in the zoning code and elsewhere are going to be discussed and debated.
LaRue Planning & Management is the consultant working on the plan for the county and the community. Jim LaRue is the president of that company, and also calls North Fort Myers his home.
An email address and website has been set up specifically for the proposed North Fort Myers Code: nftmyers@larueplanning.com and larue-planning.com/north-fort-myers.html. Questions and comments are welcome.
