Tours Now Offered to Public Each Wednesday and Friday at Burroughs Home

Both Wednesday and Friday tours of the historic Burroughs Home in Fort Myers are now available to the public. The tours begin at 11:00 a.m. The Uncommon Friends Foundation manages the Georgian Revival Mansion, located on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River.

The one-hour tour of the home and grounds provides an insight into the lives of the Burroughs Home residents at the turn on the 20th Century. The Burroughs Home is one of the oldest homes in Fort Myers, dating back to 1901, and has undergone several renovations in the past few years. It was the scene of many social events that hosted the Fort Myers’ elite, including the Edisons, Fords, and Firestones.

Built in 1901 for a wealthy businessman, the Burroughs Home was one of the first homes of quality built in Fort Myers. Situated in the historic riverfront section of town, the house is furnished with select original family pieces and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an elegant two and a half-story home with over two acres of stately oak trees, which shade the lawn on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River.

The cost for the tour is $10.00. Children under 12 are free. Reservations are not required, but are appreciated and may be made by calling 337-0706. Special tours and lunch can be provided for groups of eight or more for $20.00.

The Uncommon Friends Foundation, established in 1993, is a character education foundation whose mission is to instill ethics, moral values and a sense of purpose in tomorrow’s leaders. The foundation is dedicated to enriching society by promoting the positive values James D. Newton discovered in five unique men and their wives-Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Dr. Alexis Carrel, and Charles Lindbergh-intellectual giants who helped shape the 20th Century.
