ANDREA GALABINSKI Investigators still on site where human remains were discovered.

Since Tuesday, March 22, detectives, crime scene personnel and more have been on site to try to solve the mystery of the human remains found in North Fort Myers in a wooded area near Southeast 24th Street and Birkdale Avenue.

While much is not known at this time, it has been stated that the remains have been there a long time.

“We needed to get a forensic anthropologist involved; you’ve got bones so old it isn’t like dealing with a traditional body which was just discovered,” said Lee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Schall.

“They are also using machetes to get through the dense brush in the area. It’s three to five acres, very thickly wooded so they have to use machetes to get back in that area.”

The gathering of information may take a while, he said. “We don’t know if it is foul play or natural, and obviously we need to determine who it is out there.”

The area has a history of remains found. Investigators recovered remains of the body of a 17-year-old who committed suicide in that area. “That was a few years back,” said Schall. “That report of a death investigation was dated March 13, 2009. A woman was trying to locate her cat and found a body that was lying through the ground, a missing person who committed suicide.”

On Tuesday night, the call came in to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office about the discovery of the now-investigated remains.

After days of investigation, it is still unclear who the individual was, or if they were a victim of foul play.

“It is going to be a while,” said Lee County Sheriff spokesperson John Sheehan. “We believe that the remains have been there a long time, and at this point, there is no way to determine if it was foul play.”

Crime Scene Units and detectives have been at the area for days. “It’s probably going to be an ongoing investigation into this. There are no updates at this time. We’re still out there.”

It’s a large wooded area, with dense brush, which makes it more difficult, he said.
