“Road Closure Update”

Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 4:19 p.m. a Fort Myers Police Officer spotted a white, Dodge pickup truck pulling a trailer with a black fuel tank on the flatbed of the trailer. The tank was pouring fuel from a lower drain. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the Edison Bridge. The driver and passenger got out of the truck and capped the open valve. Investigators estimate 100 gallons of fuel from the 500 gallon tank spilled onto the roadway and into the river.

In addition to FMPD, the Fort Myers Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection responded to the incident. A sand truck was used in the cleanup efforts. The bridge and surrounding roads reopened at 5:30 p.m.

Police have detained both the driver and passenger. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending in the case.
