Earth Day Events with Goodwill
For more than 100 years, Goodwill has been a positive environmental steward, by repurposing gently used items that might otherwise have been dumped into landfills. As one of the original believers in the “reduce, reuse, recycle” concept, Goodwill has several events planned for Earth Day (Friday, April 22).
Goodwill Secure Shred in North Fort Myers is offering free shredding for both individuals and businesses at its North Fort Myers headquarters (4940 Bayline Drive). Free shredding will be offered from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday only. Secure Shred recently earned AAA certification from the National Association for Information Destruction. Shredding customers are asked to use the facility’s Electric Lane entrance.
Goodwill is also partnering with its neighbor in North Fort Myers, LCEC, for an employee donation drive. Employees of the electric cooperative are encouraged to bring donations of gently used clothing, household goods, and electronics to work on Earth Day. In exchange, they will receive a free lunch, donated by Costco Wholesale. The donation drive will be held at LCEC’s headquarters (4980 Bayline Drive).
In Naples, Goodwill and Collier County Solid Waste are teaming up for an Earth Day celebration at Goodwill’s Towne Centre location (3759 Tamiami Tr. E.). Goodwill Secure Shred will accept materials for free shredding, and Goodwill’s Retail & Donation Centers will also accept donations. In addition, Collier County Solid Waste will collect household chemicals, rechargeable batteries, paints, and other hazardous items. Drug Free Collier will also be on hand to safely dispose of unused and expired medicines. The celebration begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.
Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida operates 25 retail and donation centers in order to support its mission of helping people with disabilities and other disadvantages overcome their barriers to employment and independence.
Goodwill Secure Shred was established in 2007 in order to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities while also providing a needed service to the community.
