After a fun-filled groundbreaking ceremony for the Doggie Heaven dog park coming to the Shell Factory & Nature Park, the permitting process is now under way.

It was a great event, said the Shell Factory’s Pamela Cronin. “We had well over 60 dogs come with their owners — from a giant white Great Dane to a tiny Pekingese who wore sunglasses and a hat.”

Lee County Commissioner Tammy Hall, North Fort Myers Honorary Mayor Michelle Brisendine and North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce President Pastor Phil Goss helped The Shell Factory’s Richard Dunmire break ground.

Besides being open to the public, the park will provide venues for several animal groups, including Aqua Dog Sports (home of the Suncoast Dockdogs) and the Southwest Florida Wiener Dog Club.

“We are actually calling it Doggie Heaven — The Canine Sports Park,” Cronin said.

“We are building a 40-foot dock and a water area for the Dockdogs — they compete to see how far they can jump out into water,” said Cronin. There will also be an agility course for other groups, and they are working with an obedience school to utilize the park.

“We are attempting to build one of the best dog parks on the coast,” said Shell Factory General Partner Tom Cronin Sr.

After permitting and construction, the date of the actual opening will be announced.

The Shell Factory is located at 2787 N. Tamiami Trail.
