Local senior services business offers free fall prevention and safety assessments

Fort Myers resident Ann Montgomery traded in a high-powered corporate career to fulfill two life goals. One, to adopt children and be able to spend time with them, and two, to help elderly members of the community.
She was a senior regional vice president for Comcast before leaving that world to start her own business. In 2010, Montgomery opened ComForcare Senior Services, a non-medical, in-home care services business that started in Fort Myers, and now serves North Fort Myers and other local Lee County areas, as well as areas in Collier County.
Owning her own business has allowed her the freedom to spend time with her children and focus on senior care.
Her own mother’s aging hit home to her on the need for senior support, along what she said she saw everyday. “Every time I go to the grocery store I see people that need help, just a little bit of help, things we take for granted like going grocery shopping.”
There are people all over the area that need that extra help, she said. “That can be in their home, homemaking assistance, and for companionship and personal care.”
Working with fall prevention has also been a big part of her business.
“When Ann read a story about the fall statistics in a local newspaper, we decided to add a fall prevention and safety assessment to each client admission,” said staff member Debra Lyons, RN.
According to the Florida Department of Health, unintentional falls remain the leading cause of injury and death for Floridians over 64 years of age and a major source of disability.
They do their assessments at no charge and do fall prevention seminars in the community. ComForcare is offering communities in North Fort Myers the opportunity to schedule a free seminar.
Lyons has worked with Montgomery and her company for over a year. “I like working with Ann because she shares my compassion for older adults and working with families that need support.”
Of what they do, Lyons said, “It may be going to the doctors or going the grocery store (with clients) to maintain their independence in their own home.”
It could also be going to a Miracle baseball game, the beach or a movie, Montgomery said, as well as household help.
One thing that was important to Montgomery was having a business with no contractors – only all employees. “That’s the heart of our company. And we are very specific about hiring criteria.”
