Many wished North Fort Myers Fire Chief Terry Pye well on his upcoming retirement at an open house Friday, Sept. 16.

Pye will officially retire Oct. 1 after 31 years of service, all spent in North Fort Myers.

Many firefighters, fire and other officials from throughout Lee County and community well-wishers attended the event. During his career, Pye not only actively served the local community, he served the entire Lee County area as well.

Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott, also a long-time North Fort Myers community resident, said he has known Chief Pye for a long time. “He taught me in the police academy – CPR and more back in 1987.”

Scott said Pye has been more than active in the community. “He’s been a good leader for the guys here (firefighters) and we have worked very, very well together for many years.”

Of the transition to Assistant Chief Chris Noble taking over for Pye Scott said, “It will be a very smooth transition. Chief Pye has left good legacy.”

“He’s earned his retirement,” said North Fort Myers Fire Commissioner Leroy Nottingham. “It’s been 31 years.”

Commission Chairman Tom Mere agreed.

“Terry has always been a very stable force for our department. We can always depend on his knowledge and leadership.”

Wife Darlene is happy to have Pye retire. She has been a staunch supporter of all of his efforts in the community.

“Terry has been my hero, he’s always been there for me. I shared him with the community, and am now looking forward to having more time with him, and for him to let his hair down and have fun.”

Pye will remain as chief until Oct. 1, when Assistant Chief Chris Noble will take over as North Fort Myers Fire Chief.
