Classics for Kids Cruise-In at Bayshore Fire Rescue District to help holiday fund raising
The annual Classics for Kids Cruise-In was held last week to assist the Bayshore Fire & Rescue District in fulfilling its holiday campaign to help Lee County’s less fortunate children.
Each year, the district helps gather food and toys for local children for the holidays.
“It is of great benefit to us because every year we see more and more families in need,” said Bayshore Fire Chief Larry Nisbet. “It is groups like the car club that enable us to help local families over the holidays. We wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”
“It’s a big rally where they come and bring gifts for the children and non-perishable food items,” said Theresa Sharp, office manager for the district.
Sponsors of the event included the Hot Chili Cruisers Classic Car Club, a favorite of the station. Vaughn Sewell was the coordinator of the event.
“The help we put out helps the kids,” he said. “The car people not only collect toys, but they also bring food – canned goods and what have you – and, of course, I have always loved cars and the people that have them.”
According to Sewell, this is the second year that the club has worked with the district.
“I think the people at Bayshore fire are great. I’ve put on larger shows, but the Bayshore event was special,” he said.
Sharp noted that the Publix at Verandah Shops, Publix at Hancock Bridge Parkway and Orange Grove Boulevard, Costco on Alico Road, Wal-Mart in North Fort Myers and Ed Cornish, a volunteer Bayshore firefighter, also were key to the fund-raiser.
The deejays were Tim Bird and Chuck Taylor, who kept the event up and going.
Training burn
Nisbet also spearheaded a training fire burn on Nalle Grade Road over the weekend.
“The purpose was to conduct training as a exercise for firefighters to sharpen their skills,” he said.
