North Fort Myers murder update

2 min read

On Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 2:34 a.m., the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a possible suicide. The incident occurred at 2830 Garden Street, Lot #6, North Fort Myers, Florida. Deputies responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, deputies found 41 year old Deane J. Wood of North Fort Myers lying on his back in the living room. A large, bloody knife was lying in plain view on the kitchen table. The witness and roommate of the victim, who called 9-1-1, told deputies the victim had gone to visit a friend, Znop Byz Vmon, age 61, of Lot #6. It was Vmon who had come to the witnesses’ residence to state the victim was dead inside his house as a result of “gutting himself”. The witness called the Sheriff’s Office and ran to the residence.

The witness saw the victim on his back in the living room area with a knife in his left hand and a towel covering his face. The witness was aware the victim had very limited mobility and use of his left arm due to a previous injury. The victim was also right handed. The witness stepped away from the residence to speak with the 9-1-1 operator, but when he walked back he noticed the knife had been moved to the kitchen table, with the only one to have the opportunity to move the weapon being Vmon.

Due to the nature of the incident, detectives with the Major Crimes Unit responded to investigate. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had been rolled onto his back after he died and suffered two stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. Other evidence led detectives to conclude the victim could not have taken his own life and Vmon had committed second degree murder.

The suspect has been charged and transported to the Lee County a jail. A mugshot and additional information is available on the Sheriff’s Office website under Crime Activity/Inmate Search.
