Rally for the Cure golf, social events next weekend at Magnolia Landing
The highly successful annual Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure golf event will take place on Friday, Feb. 3, and Saturday, Feb. 4, at The Golf Club at Magnolia Landing in North Fort Myers.
After several years, what started as one-day golf event grew to a two-day fund raiser, including a co-ed golf tournament, a pre-start cocktail party, a luncheon and auction.
The event has long been spearheaded by local Rally Ambassador Monica Young. “The challenge has not yet been matched to find a cure for breast cancer. Our focus is to someday celebrate the cure for breast cancer for both men and women.”
The myth that breast cancer is a women’s-only disease has been strictly disproved in the last several years, and men and women both play at the signature co-ed golf tournament there.
“Real men do really wear pink, too,” said committee member Judy Croft. Pink is the signature color of the Komen event. Of the men, she said, “They are also out there supporting their wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends.”
The fund raiser also supports the Magnolia Landing Pink Magnolia Walk Team that participates in Race For The Cure, this year to be held on Saturday, March 10, at Coconut Point Mall.
The mission of Rally for the Cure is to emphasize the importance of early detection in the successful treatment of breast cancer and to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
The community of Magnolia Landing has made the cause a priority.
“It is our community’s biggest event of the year,” said Magnolia Landing General Manager Brain Wasser.
It’s open to the public.
“We’re starting out with a cocktail evening on Friday,” he said. Those that don’t want to golf are urged to support the cocktail party, lunch and auction.
“All are encouraged to come. We’re always excited to host this event. Every year, we continued to increase what we raise.”
“We’re working hard to get great auction items,” said Committee Member Darlene Sullivan. “There will be rounds of golf at area golf courses, dinner certificates, hair and beauty services and more, all within the community.”
“There are also great handmade personalized golf towels that can be ordered to support the event,” Young said. That’s monogrammed pink for the ladies and black with pink trim for men.
Several of the committee members for the event are breast cancer survivors, including Croft and Brenda Polselli.
“I think it is personal, both to me and dear friends,” said Polselli.
A highlight each year at the auction is a handmade quilt.
“The theme is always a surprise – and it is a heirloom quilt pattern this year,” said Young.
She thanked designer Lynn Lebida, and Debbie Olive of Quilt Lover’s Hangout in North Fort Myers, for their effort.
“They have done so much for us on the quilt in the past.
“It is important to find the funds that stay in our community,” said Young of the Komen cause.
