Marlene Merrick and Tina Hyland weigh in with coach Jo Marie Faccioli at Bayshore Village.

Residents in the Bayshore Village community made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight as a group – and have fun while doing it.

“You’ll see everyone walking and riding their bikes around the park almost every day,” said participant Gloria Bowen. “Some of them even walk with weights.”

They started Jan. 2.

“We had a Christmas party at a house and everybody decided to become healthier as a New Year’s resolution.”

About 15 of these friends and neighbors are in the group. They call themselves the Bayshore Village Biggest Losers Diet Club.

“I love watching that show, and that’s what gave me the idea.”

The whole group said they are also having a lot of fun doing it together. They meet every week for a weigh in.

“We weigh in and give each other encouragement and applause.”

Jo Marie Faccioli is the one who keeps track of everyone’s progress and oversees the weigh ins.

“Our group has already lost 108 pounds as of Feb. 2.”

“There’s no pressure, you come and have fun and lose weight at no cost.”

She said they also talk about nutrition, what they ate and what they shouldn’t have eaten.

This week they started eliminations to see who has lost the most, which is during six weeks, and will be decided by percentage of weight lost.

Next week, they’ll start something new, called “I Wanna Be!!!Skinny” along the same lines.

The program is open to any resident of Bayshore Village, and you sign up at their clubhouse.

“We’re hoping we could be an inspiration for other local communities or villages to try a program like this,” said Bowen.
