Bridge work to force detours on Bayshore

2 min read

Those looking to use Bayshore Road during the overnight hours next week will have to take the long way home.

And for those going westbound, it could be a very long way home, so be sure you’ve gassed up.

As part of the State Department of Transportation’s expansion project to create six lanes on Interstate 75 from Bayshore Road (State Road 78) to Charlotte County, line crews are scheduled to install drainage features, finish grading in the medians and outside shoulders, install guardrail and place sod along the project limits.

This week, crews will work on preparations for painting the new bridge girders, making sure the cones are in place and everything is aligned, said Jo Ann May of the Florida DOT.

The following week, crews will paint the new bridge girders on the interstate overpasses across Bayshore Road.

“They don’t want to damage vehicles going underneath the bridge, so they’ll have to close the road and have the detour in place,” May said.

The work will require nighttime/overnight partial and full roadway closures on Bayshore Road, between 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. from Sunday, April 27, through Friday, May 2.

Motorists traveling eastbound on SR 78 must use I-75 south to exit at exit 141, the State Road 80/Palm Beach Boulevard interchange, re-enter I-75 northbound to exit at Bayshore Road at exit 143.

For drivers traveling westbound on SR 78, it will be like driving to Boston via Omaha. They’ll have to use I-75 north and exit at Tuckers Grade exit 158.

They will then re-enter I-75 southbound and exit at Bayshore Road. Round trip, about 30 miles.

May said there could be times – with emphasis on could – when traffic will be allowed to pass through, especially in the early evening or in the event work is finished early. But at press time, that was not definite.

Signs will mark the detour. Law enforcement will be on-site. Drivers should pay attention to traffic signs and barricades throughout the construction project, maintain a safe speed, stay alert, and use caution in the work zone. Fines double for speeding violations in work zones when workers are present.

The expansion of I-75 is expected to be completed some time in summer. The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries.

Also, crews will be sweeping curbs and gutters on state roadways, especially Bayshore. Motorists can expect lane closures during the hours of 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., weeknights, weather permitting.
