It was a day where kids could get wet and wild on their day off from school.

Many kids showed up at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center on Friday for its annual Fun Day, an event that was guaranteed to keep children occupied with recreation instead on video games.

“It’s perfect. It’s $15, it’s all day and we provide plenty of activities. We had tons of games and activities,” said counselor Jennifer Velez.

They started coming in around 7:30 a.m., with swim suits, towels, changes of clothing, lunch and a snack in tow. And even if it was a little cool and cloudy, they had fun with the Slip and Slide and water balloon battles before going inside for some arts and crafts.

It was then on to play kickball on one of the Little League fields before lunch, some more indoor stuff, a movie, fun at the playground and an adventurous nature walk.

The program has been going on for years at the park, where it was held in the building at the Pop Warner fields. But the new rec center, with the multitude of attractions, has added a whole new dimension.

“We’ve had these events as long as we’ve operated. Now that we’re in the public eye, people are catching wind of what we’re doing,” Velez said. “We can go to the gym if it rains, so it’s nice.”

And the kids had a blast, especially when it was discovered that a wedding ring was lost at the field they were playing on. Suddenly, they were interested more in the reward than kickball.

“I get to hang out with my friends and make new ones, meet the counselors and have fun. It’s better than staying home sometimes,” said Kagan Vann. “I like kickball because it’s like baseball.”

Esteban Aguinaga had a lot to say about camp, and about everything else. He said he liked being outside, as opposed to playing video games.

“I wanted to get out of the game and look for the ring that was lost here. Kagan already looked around the outside of the field and we started looking under the bases and crawling around like puppies,” Esteban said. “I said if I found it, I would split the reward with him.”

Coming this week will be a little adult fun, for all ages.

On Saturday, the final free concert of the season sponsored by the Rotary of North Fort Myers will happen, with Black Water, a country-rock band performing.

The concert will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rotary Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs. Just don’t bring any coolers and outside food.
