Design and technology showcase returns tonight

3 min read

North Fort Myers High School’s most gifted media and graphic artists will show off their best work on Wednesday when the second annual Digital Knight is held in the media center starting at 6 p.m.

And the awards for the best in each class will be bigger than last year.

The event is a design and technology showcase for digital media students who are the very best in graphic design, animation, gaming, Web design, TV production and photography.

Among the categories are best 3D model, best 3D animation, best game, best Graphic Design, best Red Knight item, best photo manipulation, best music video, best commercial and best Website.

There is a lot on the line. First place for all categories will receive a Samsung Chromebook, Digital Knight pen and cup, and a Digital Knight T-shirt.

Jennifer Curls, 3D animation and digital design teacher, said the prizes are bigger and better than ever.

“I thought last year’s prizes were good. We have the Chromebooks this year, and we’ve even added some internships,” she said.

The internships are especially important to give students a chance to jump start their careers. The winners of best photo manipulation and best graphic design will receive an internship at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment.

The winners of best music video and best commercial will receive an internship at NBC2 and ABC7 television stations in Fort Myers.

“Our district offers the Learn to Earn program where high school teachers visit businesses and get a connection so if students need a job, internship or shadow day, they can have that,” Curls said. “This bridges the gap between school and area businesses.”

First place for Best Music Video and Best Commercial will get a GoPro Video to go with the Digital Knight pen and cup, and T-shirt.

Second-place winners get a pair of LG wireless headphones, a Digital Knight pen and T-shirt.

Third place earns a Digital Knight cup and T-shirt and two movie tickets.

This year’s event had 224 entries, up more than 30 from last year, Curls said, adding that there were so many submissions this year that they may have to limit the number of submissions in each category.

“We’ll need to be more picky and choosey. We had so many kids who wanted to enter and we couldn’t take anymore because we have no more computers to put the work on,” Curls said.

The winners have been determined. However, the students did not know until Monday morning. They will not pick up their prizes until Wednesday.
