Homecoming will be a Knight to savor at North

North Fort Myers High School is about to add to its Homecoming tradition in a way like it’s never done before.

As a way to get more of the community involved with the special event, the school is beginning its new “Savor the Knight” event on Wednesday, Oct. 22, where local restaurants will sell samples of their signature dishes while all the other festivities are happening.

The event will be at Moody Field from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., where local restaurants will line up along the track to sell their wares, most of which will cost no more than a few dollars.

Jennifer Curls, Arts & Media Director at the school, came up with the idea as a way to bring a new dimension to an evening full of Homecoming activities.

“Wednesday night is a rally that the school always has. Typically it’s been powder puff football for the girls with the boys as cheerleaders and the clubs always have booths around the track selling things,” Curls said.

This year, Curls said she wanted to invite the community to the events, so she made calls and got 10 restaurants to set up along with the clubs, which will set up carnival-themed booths.

“It’s another way to advertise for the local restaurants but also a way to get the community in and not just the high school students,” Curls said. “We want a North Fort Myers event.”

Tickets are $1 each, $5 for six and $10 for 15 tickets.

Participating restaurants include; Nestor’s, Doodlebugs, Cici’s Pizza, Kona Ice, Smoothie King, Applebee’s, Dale’s Dockside restaurant & Tiki, Olive Garden, Perico’s and Soprano’s Pizza.

Y100-FM will sponsor the event.

Kona Ice will be the only vendor to accept cash and not tickets, Curls said. A portion of the proceeds will go to the AICE Business Studies class, with an educational element that goes along with it, since it’s actually part of the curriculum.

“Now that I have these restaurants on board, they have to go and build the relationship with the owner,” Curls said. “They’ll have a meeting and set the menu, the cost, time of arrival, and they will be their helpers that night.”

Curls said AICE, which offers college credit for business courses, will put the money toward starting up a school store.

Curls added it is asked that everyone bring a canned food item to the event to benefit Harry Chapin Food Bank.

“The students donate, the parents donate. We want to see the community involvement, and this is a way we want to get it started,” Curls said. “It’s a good event where you can have good food and watch football.”
