Rec Center to start social dance class

2 min read

So, you think you can dance? If so, this class may be for you.

Couples are invited to attend a new social dance class from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Mondays beginning Nov. 7 at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center, 2000 N. Recreation Park Way, North Fort Myers.

Instructors Dick and Darlene Chase will guide dancers through music and step-by-step instruction. Classes will include the rumba, cha-cha, and the fox trot.

Lisa Weaver, supervisor of the rec center, said the instructors came to them and said they had this program that they have run at other places with great success.

They saw the rec center wasn’t offering anything like this and expressed interest.

“I talked to some SHARE Club members (the program is not affiliated with the group) and told them I thought it would be very successful and it would fill a gap in programming that we don’t have,” Weaver said.

Other than a youth tap dance program, Weaver doesn’t remember the rec center offering anything similar to this for adults.

The class will start with the basics for six weeks. You will progressively learn the different types of dances.

“This is a social dance, so you’ll learn things like the cha-cha and other dances, but with slight variations that make them less stringent than you might be used to,” Weaver said. “This isn’t ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ Come have fun, learn to dance with a partner and have a good time.”

If you take the course for additional time, you will learn new moves, but you could also take the usual six weeks and be okay, Weaver said.

Weaver said any kind of clothing will suffice. She said some have come dressed to the nines, while many have also come casually. You will need to bring a partner and an open mind. Hopefully, you’ll have fun.

The fee is $6 per person (couples only) and the class is intended for ages 18 and up. A $10 individual facility membership also is required for this program.
