Take a hike at Pop Ash Creek

2 min read

It may be summer, but there are still plenty of opportunities to admire the nicest trails North Fort Myers has to offer.

And with Saturday being National Trails Day, what better way to celebrate than with a free guided hike at 8 a.m., at Pop Ash Creek Preserve, a Lee County Conservation 20/20 preserve at 9451 Nalle Grade Road.

Hikers will have the opportunity to observe native plants and wildlife and discuss recent land management activities, such as the removal of invasive species, with a certified master naturalist who will lead the 1.5-mile loop hike.

Jason Boeckman, coordinator of the Conservation 20/20 program in Lee County, said the county is excited to celebrate the day and invite the public to come to Pop Ash Creek because it is a large and scenic preserve that provides a golden opportunity to see species many are unfamiliar with.

“There is a very good chance people will see an alligator in the preserve’s large pond and swallowtail kites (a raptor more common in Central and South America) in the slash pine trees,” Boeckman said. “We want people from all over the celebrate this day with us.”

This is the second year Lee County has participated and the second time Pop Ash Creek has hosted. Last year’s event brought nearly 20 hikers, with at least as many expected this year, Boeckman said.

“Pop Ash Creek’s trails are very wide so a large crowd is able to handle it,” Boeckman said. “If you have never visited Pop Ash Creek Preserve this is the time to be introduced to a new place for wildlife and plants.”

No registration is required. Hikers are encouraged to bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and camera and to wear closed-toed shoes. This trail is not ADA-accessible.

National Trails Day is the only national event designed to unite those who enjoy trail activities and connect more people to trails. It is celebrated every year on the first Saturday of June.
