Events rescheduled in wake of Irma

2 min read

Venues and organizations in North Fort Myers are regrouping in the wake of Hurricane Irma which, in addition to causing serious damage, resulted in the cancellation of numerous events.

At the Shell Factory, the Nam Jam, an event to honor veterans, especially those who served in the Vietnam War, has been postponed to Oct. 22, as power was not restored until Thursday afternoon.

The North Fort Myers Junior Football Association has seen all practices and games for the last two weeks wiped out by Irma, as per the Peace River Conference, as numerous fields were either unsafe for practice, without power, or both.

Also, the Lee County Posse Arena had several events planned, such as its Mary Lou’s Buckle Series barrel race, which had to be called off.

Robin Ray, who helps organize the jackpot races, said she expects the National Barrel Horse Association race to go on as scheduled Saturday.

The planned move of the North Fort Myers Library to its temporary location on Pine Island Road was scrubbed for at least two weeks. It is now scheduled for Saturday.

Behind the library, everything ground to a halt at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center for this past week and this week as well. The rec center was made into an emergency shelter by the Red Cross, and it has remained such as area shelters have closed and those still without a place to go or electricity have been moved there.

The shelter is expected to close this weekend.

The North Fort Myers Civic Association cancelled its September meeting as a result of the rec center’s change of priority. President Michael Land said he plans to have the organization do itspart in cleanup by starting up a group that will assist in tidying up North Fort Myers.
