Library again reschedules its move to temporary site
For the second time, the planned move of the North Fort Myers Library to its temporary location has been rescheduled due to Hurricane Irma.
The move now will take place from Oct. 7 to 9. The relocation was originally supposed to happen last month, from Sept. 9 to 11, but when it appeared Irma was headed toward Southwest Florida, the move was moved to this past weekend.
However, it took a while to get power restored, so the decision was made to push the move back another two weeks.
The move is scheduled to occur in preparation for the construction of the new North Fort Myers Library. The existing library will move to a temporary location nearby at 50 Pine Island Road.
The current library will close at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct.7, and reopen in the temporary facility at noon Tuesday, Oct. 10. Materials can be returned to the book drop at the temporary location beginning 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.
For the period of construction, the temporary site will offer the basic services: public computers, holds, pickups, new materials, popular materials (books and DVDs), youth programming area and reference services.
Construction of the new library will begin after demolition of the current facility. The new library will be about 25,000 square feet and is expected to open in the summer of 2019. The $12.5 million construction cost will be paid from existing library fund balances.
The temporary location hours will be Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
