Library move rescheduled due to Irma
The planned move of the North Fort Myers Public Library to a temporary location has been pushed back two weeks because of the Hurricane Irma and the uncertainty of its path as of Thursday.
The move to the temporary location, which was to take place this weekend, will instead happen on the weekend of Sept. 23 through 25.
“Due to the hurricane in the Atlantic, it seems prudent to delay the move to the temporary library location,” said Lee County spokeswoman Betsy Clayton.
The move is in preparation for the construction of the new 25,000-square-foot, $12.5 million North Fort Myers Library, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2019.
The old library, which was built in 1980 and expanded in 1995, will be demolished to make room for the new building. The start of construction has not been set.
The existing library will move to a temporary location nearby at 50 Pine Island Road North in North Fort Myers. The current library will close at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, and reopen in the temporary facility at noon Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Materials may be returned to the book drop at the temporary location beginning 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.
During construction, the temporary site will offer the basic services such as public computers, new materials, popular materials, youth programming area and reference services.
The temporary location hours will be Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sunday and Monday.
