Yard sale at rec center Saturday

2 min read

It’s been said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. On Saturday, there will be an opportunity to find out for yourself.

Lee County Parks & Recreation will hold its annual yard sale to benefit the United Way from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center, 2000 North Recreation Park Way, in the parking lot adjacent to the football field.

The Lee Board of County Commissioners, a longtime supporter of United Way, has a 2017-18 fundraising campaign goal to raise $10 million to benefit local charities through United Way.

This event is one of many that Lee County Parks & Recreation is using to help meet that goal. All proceeds from the sale go directly to United Way.

The event is different from the flea market, which is done in February. This event will help people pay for their Christmas shopping while giving those looking to buy a chance to find great bargains.

“Who doesn’t like to try and find something for a great price or for nostalgia. It also goes for a great cause,” said rec center supervisor Lisa Weaver.

People can contribute to the event three ways. You can donate items. Lee County Parks & Recreation will be receiving donated items and selling them on Saturday, with proceeds going to the United Way. Donated items may be dropped off at the rec center any time before the day of the event.

You can also rent a parking space and sell your own items for a $10 donation. Stop by the Recreation Center to reserve your spot by Friday. As of Monday, 15 spots had been sold, a low number caused by the lingering effects of Hurricane Irma, which was used as a shelter.

“This is an event where people come close to the day of, and we still get donations,” Weaver said. “We usually get 10 to 15 more the day of.”

You can also come and shop on Saturday. Among the items available will be DVDs, compact discs, clothing, jewelry, furniture, toys, games, books and much more.

Those who intend to sell items should plan to arrive by 6:30 a.m. to set up to get their spot. Foot traffic is expected to be great, as Pop Warner football playoffs are planned, Weaver said.
