March’s roster of activities at North Fort Myers Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:
Adult Programs
Books & Bites Social Hour
11 a.m. Monday, March 6
Join us for an hour of books, fun and conversation. Everyone is welcome to stop by to discuss their favorite books. Get recommendations on everything from recent releases to forgotten classics. Refreshments will be provided.
DIY Craft Club: Spring Centerpiece
2 p.m. Thursday, March 9
Create a unique spring centerpiece at this fun craft program for adults. Registration is required and all materials will be provided.
Small Worlds in Galaxies Far, Far Away
2 p.m. Saturday, March 11
Diorama and miniatures artist Stephen Hayford has created Star Wars-themed images for Lucasfilm, Disney, Hasbro, Lego, Fantasy Flight Games and others. He will share stories about his career working in the film industry and offer a short demonstration on how to create your own sci-fi set out of items around your house or from the recycling bin. Seating is limited. First come, first served. For ages 12 and up.
Book Discussion: “Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver
2 p.m. Thursday, March 16
The teenage son of an Appalachian single mother who dies when he is 11 uses his good looks, wit, and instincts to survive foster care, child labor, addiction, disastrous loves and crushing losses.
Zen Meditation: Its History, Culture and Art
2 p.m. Saturday, March 18
Join Japanese translator Ian Verhine for an introduction to the history, culture and art of Zen Buddhism and meditation. Teens and adults are welcome.
Simple Steps to Boost your Immune System
1 p.m. Wednesday, March 22
Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense against foreign invaders like germs and viruses. Your lifestyle habits may help or harm it. Join Humana’s Health talk on simple steps to boost your immunity.
Children’s Programs
Preschool Play Date
11 a.m. Wednesday, March 8
For families with children ages 3-5. Meet new friends while developing early literacy skills through free play with games, toys and music.
Kids Read Down Fines
2 – 3 p.m. Saturday, March 11
Children and teens can earn a $2 credit on overdue fines for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Please bring your library card.
Read to Dogs
2 p.m. Saturday, March 11
Join us at the library to read to dogs. The dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children. You can read down fines or just encourage a love of reading in your children with reading to dogs.
Books and Blankets
6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14
Join us with your blankies and pajamas for this nighttime edition of storytime. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.
Family Storytime
11 a.m. Wednesday, March 29
For children through age five and caregivers. Families with young children enjoy a variety of stories, songs, rhymes and movement.
Baby Rhyme Time
11 a.m. Thursday, March 30
For babies up to 18 months. Babies and caregivers wiggle and giggle in a supportive environment. Space is limited. Arrive early and visit the children’s desk to check in. First come, first served.
