As Idalia approaches, county advises residents to stay off the roads

Lee County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Brian Hamman said Hurricane Idalia continues to strengthen Tuesday afternoon and advised residents to stay off roads.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has placed Lee County under a tropical storm warning through Wednesday morning.
The county announced its offices will close Wednesday and The School District of Lee County has also canceled all classes and school activities for Wednesday.
Hamman said there is a threat of tornadoes in the area and that localized flooding has been reported.
“We encourage you to stay off the roadways if you don’t need to be, especially this evening,” Hamman said. “There is a lot of stormy weather on the south side of this storm.”
Hamman said the county will resume trash pickup Wednesday afternoon and LeeTran will resume operations sometime Wednesday.
The county will reschedule its Wednesday meeting in Sanibel for its community block grant funding to this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at BIG ARTS.
The county’s safe haven centers remain open in Estero and North Fort Myers. Pets are allowed at the centers, Hamman said.
The safe havens are at:
North Fort Myers Recreation Center, 2000 North Recreation Park Way, North Fort Myers, FL, 22903
Estero Recreation Center, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd., Estero, FL, 33928
