Lee students head back to class Thursday after Hurricane Idalia

Students and staff will head back to campus Thursday after schools were closed for two days due to Hurricane Idalia.
“We have had staff at every campus today and determined they were all safe to open,” said School District of Lee County spokesperson Rob Spicker.
Initial inspection showed only minor physical damage to one building and some minor water intrusion in a couple of others, Spicker said.
“We are addressing those issues, so that the schools are prepared for students,” he said.
The district is already starting to review their options for the two hurricane make-up days after schools closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
District communication sent to parents said the schools were closed out of an “abundance of caution due to the forecast for tropical storm winds and rain.”
Spicker said once a schedule is approved, they will notify all families and update the calendar on leeschools.net.
With the district receiving a great deal of help from other school districts last year following Hurricane Ian, Spicker said they are looking for ways they can pay that help forward in north Florida.
