Next month’s roster of activities at North Fort Myers Public Library offers topics for all ages.
The following activities are free to the public:
Adult programs
English Café
10:30 a.m. Thursdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22
Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.
Books & Bites
11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5
Join us for an hour of books, fun and conversation. Everyone is welcome to stop by to discuss their favorite books. Get recommendations on everything from recent releases to forgotten classics. Refreshments will be provided.
DIY Craft Club: Painted Tote Bag
2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8
Use paint and creativity to design a personalized tote bag in this fun craft program just for adults. All materials will be provided. Registration is required.
Valentine’s Day Karaoke
6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13
Whether you like cheesy love songs or angry metal, we invite you to celebrate Valentine’s Day and sing your heart out at the library.
Duffy Hudson Presents: Nikola Tesla
2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14
Actor Duffy Hudson will portray Nikola Tesla, who contributed to the development of the modern alternating current electric power system. Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor and engineer and rival to Thomas Edison.
Book Discussion: “A True Account” by Katherine Howe
2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15
“A True Account: Hannah Masury’s Sojourn Amongst the Pyrates, Written by Herself,” by New York Times bestselling author and Southwest Florida Reading Festival presenter Katherine Howe, is a daring firsthand account of one young woman’s unbelievable adventure as one of the most terrifying sea rovers of all time.
This event is part of the 25th anniversary Southwest Florida Reading Festival, to be held Saturday, March 2. For more information about the festival and its featured authors, visit ReadFest.org.
Trivia: Game of Thrones Edition
6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20
How well do you know Westeros? Between dragons, nobles and various nations, do you know more than Littlefinger’s intel network?
LCSO Series: Residential Security
2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21
Presented by Destiny Unsworth, a Crime Prevention Practitioner with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. This program will cover best practices to properly secure your home and property, how to identify suspicious activity and much more.
Children’s programs
Baby Rhyme Time
11 a.m. Thursdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
For babies up to 18 months. Babies and caregivers wiggle and giggle in a supportive environment. Space is limited. Arrive early and visit the children’s desk to check in.
STEAM Saturday
11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3
Join us for a family-friendly STEAM exploration. Each month will feature a different activity based on the aspects of STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. This is a great opportunity for parents and kids to build, learn and play together.
Family Storytime
11 a.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28
For children through age 5 and caregivers. Families with young children enjoy a variety of stories, songs, rhymes and movement.
Kids Read Down Fines
2 – 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10
Children and teens can earn a $2 credit on overdue fines for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Please bring your library card.
Read to the Dogs
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10
Join us at the library to read to dogs. The dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children. You can read down fines or just encourage a love of reading in your children with reading to dogs.
Storytelling with Windell Campbell featuring African-American Stories
2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16
Experience the art of puppetry with the art of storytelling. Mr. Windell uses props and audience participation to bring stories to life. Stories could include “Br’er Rabbit,” “Anansi,” “Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears,” “The People Could Fly” or the story of “John Henry.”
