Cape High’s Math Team seeking funds to cover travel costs
The Cape Coral High Math Team is sending students to the state mathematics competition next month in Orlando and is asking for donations to mitigate travel costs.
On Valentine’s Day, the Cape High team finished eighth out of 111 schools in the regional competition.
Math team member Kyle Ramey has not only been the star of Lee County, his performance has surpassed other schools in the region. He had a perfect score on the calculus test and was one of the top students across the state out of 903 others.
Ramey is also the first Lee County student to finish first in three regional calculus competitions.
“He is just phenomenal this year,” said James Propert, math coach and teacher at Cape High. “He is one of the top kids in the state of Florida.”
Propert explained that Ramey will graduate this year and is going to attend the University of Florida. He is tentatively considering a major in nuclear science.
While the school district annually provides the team with much of the funding it needs to travel to Orlando on April 24, this year’s budget cuts have the team only sending 16 students when last year 29 attended.
Members of the team are looking for anyone willing to provide donations to the school to assist with travel costs.
“We would be honored if you could donate any amount you deem appropriate,” said Propert. “You will receive dividends greater than any bank can offer.”
The math team is also collecting donations to pay for Ramey and a teacher to travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the national mathematics competition this summer. It will cost the two approximately $1,700 to travel for five nights and the deadline to register is May 1.
On April 4, the math team will sell refreshments at the Downtown Street Market to collect funds, said Propert. They will sell coffee in front of The Red Barn and cold water in other locations.
Donations to help the team can be made by check, payable to Cape High Math Team, and submitted to James Propert at Cape Coral High School, 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd.
