Driver suffers spinal injuries, two juveniles injured in two-car crash on Pine Island Road
The driver of a Toyota pickup truck suffered serious injuries Wednesday morning after his vehicle collided with a Nissan pickup truck that turned into his pathway on Pine Island Road, officials said.
Anthony A. Stewart , 33, of 2271 Cantor Lane of North Fort Myers, sustained serious spinal injuries and was transported as a trauma alert to Lee Memorial Hospital. Stewart’s two juvenile passengers also were transported as trauma alerts, although their injuries were life-threatening.
Cape Police and Fire units responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Chiquita Boulevard at 10:16 a.m. Stewart was eastbound on Pine Island Road traveling in the inside lane and approaching the intersection of Chiquita Boulevard. A 2004 Nissan Titan, driven by Jacoah Jackson, 32, of 1503 SW 38th Terrace, was westbound on Pine Island Road and had entered the turn lane to head south on Chiquita. As Stewart entered the intersection, Jackson turned south into the path of Stewart’s truck causing a near head-on crash, officials said.
According to witnesses, Stewart’s vehicle had a green light to proceed through the intersection.
Jackson was not injured and refused medical attention. The two passengers were wearing seatbelts, which greatly decreased their levels of injury.
A criminal investigation is being conducted to determine if charges are warranted.
The passengers were Brian P. Springer, 16, 2271 Cantor Lane, North Fort Myers and
Kaleb Reagan, 9, of 2271 Cantor Lane, North Fort Myers.
