Family of German tourist injured in accident located
Cape Coral Police have located the family of Hans-Werner Hey, the motorcyclist injured earlier Monday.
Hans-Werner Hey, 48, who is from Germany, is in critical condition after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle in the 4900 block of Chiquita Boulevard South Monday afternoon.
Hey suffered severe trauma to his head and leg; however, his injuries are not life-threatening, officials said.
At 2:03 p.m., Cape Police and Fire Rescue units responded to a 911 call reporting an accident near Chiquita Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway. A red 2002 Jeep driven by Donna L. Strong, 61, of 1403 SW 49th Street, was leaving the parking lot at the Publix at 4900 Chiquita Boulevard South and waiting to travel east across Chiquita. Hey was riding a black 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Chiquita in the outside lane. Strong exited the parking lot, and began driving across the southbound lanes of Chiquita and entered the median.
According to witnesses, Strong did not stop in the median and continued across the northbound lanes into the path of the motorcycle. Hey attempted to avoid Strong’s vehicle; however, the front of the Jeep struck the left side of the motorcycle. The motorcycle was knocked to the ground and came to rest against the curb at the intersection of Southwest 49th Street and Chiquita. The driver of the motorcycle came to rest on the nearby sidewalk.
Hey suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital via Med Star. Strong suffered no injuries in the crash. The case is pending further investigation.
