Fire totals home in northwest Cape

2 min read

A Cape Coral home was destroyed by a fire Tuesday afternoon and one person was sent to the hospital, according to officials.
At 1:05 p.m., fire dispatch received a 911 call reporting a fire at 220 N.W. 10th Terrace. Fire crews arrived on scene and found the fire, which started in the garage, had advanced through the residence. The total home is a loss.
“It did end up spreading into the home,” Connie Barron, a spokeswoman for the city, said. “The fire engulfed the garage, living room and attic space.”
The fire crews attempted an interior attack, but they were forced to move to a defensive mode due to the amount of fire over their heads in the attic. The fire was extinguished at about 1:45 p.m. Water from a canal was used.
“That’s not surprising because there aren’t many hydrants in the north Cape because they don’t have city utilities up there,” she said.
One man was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with some burns and smoke inhalation, she added. The name and age of the man was unavailable, along with the number of people and any pets present when the fire broke out.
The home sustained “significant damage” and is a “complete loss,” Barron reported. LCEC has disconnected the electric service, and the American Red Cross was called in to assist. The State Fire Marshal’s was also contacted.
