Cape police charge estranged husband with attempted murder of wife’s friend
Cape Coral police arrested an estranged husband after he showed up at his wife’s residence and shot a male friend three times, officials said Monday.
Anthony Gilkes, 51, of Loxahatchee, was charged with attempted murder after he shot Deon Johnson in the face and arm, Cape Coral police said in a prepared statement.
Johnson is in stable condition at Lee Memorial Hospital and is expected to recover.
At 10:20 p.m., Cape Police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at 605 Hancock Bridge Parkway. According to Gilkes’ wife, Gilkes arrived at her home uninvited and knocked on her bedroom window. She let him enter the house through the front door because he wanted to talk. After a short time, she asked Gilkes to leave but he refused. Gilkes’ wife then went outside and attempted to leave the residence but Gilkes’ car was blocking her garage.
Johnson then came out of the house, and when Gilkes saw him, he went to his truck and retrieved a handgun. An altercation occurred between the three parties at the front doorway. As Gilkes’ wife attempted to close the door, she heard three gunshots and then saw Johnson bleeding inside her home.
Gilkes fled the area but was apprehended a short time later by Cape Police. During an interview with Cape Coral Police Detective Todd Kerns, Gilkes said he did not come to the residence with the intent to hurt anyone; however, when he found another man at the home, he got upset, officials said.
Gilkes was charged with attempted murder and transported to Lee County Jail.
